Our department provides video conferencing and Distance Learning connectivity to the University in a number of ways including the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NC-REN), and the North Carolina Information Highway (NCIH). In addition to these networks, we are also able to connect with facilities around the world using the h.323 or ISDN communication protocols.

Network Technology:

  • This network delivers and exchanges distance education classes, seminars, videoconferences, workshops, and research collaborations between twenty university locations throughout North Carolina. NC-REN provides live, two-way interaction between all sites on two analog microwave and two digital channels, and provides the capability of broadcasting multi-site programs on up to four channels simultaneously. All transmissions can be integrated into any of our delivery systems. Additionally, NC-REN currently provides live and archived streaming support for network sessions.

  • This network connects over two hundred state government and municipal facilities for interactive two-way audio/video networking via fiber optic cable. Sites include universities, community colleges, public schools, medical, and government centers throughout North Carolina. We currently connect to this network through NC-REN.

  • Our department is able to provide two-way, interactive communication with facilities around the world using the H.323 and H.264 standards for packet networks.

  • We are also able to provide connectivity around the world using Integrated Services Digital Network protocols.

Facilities

Broadcast Communications currently oversees the operation and scheduling of two interactive classrooms on campus: Atkins Library room 143, and Fretwell room 126. Videoconferences and distance education classes are each assigned dedicated operators to oversee all technical aspects of each event. Our goal is to make videoconferencing technology as transparent as possible so that instructors, students, and conference participants are free to teach, collaborate, and learn without the hassle of operating network equipment or monitoring video and audio signals.

In addition to staff, each classroom is equipped with the following:

  • Presenter's computer with university network connectivity (Novell) and Microsoft Office suite (2007).
  • Whiteboard and document camera.
  • Dual plasma displays for viewing presentations, distance sites, or both.
  • Voice activated audience microphones.
  • Wireless lavaliere microphones for multiple presenters.
  • 4 remote controlled cameras.
  • Session recording to DVD, DVCPro, or multiple streaming formats.
  • Telephone audio interface.
  • Video playback from VHS or DVD.
  • 35mm slide/video conversion.
If you'd like to see everything our classrooms have to offer in person, please contact Natasha Stracener:
